Juan
V.P. Business Development
Juan, who grew up in Lima, Peru, wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, a professional soccer player in the 1970s. But after breaking his left leg and foot in a collision with another player on the field, he had to shift his sights to something else.
At 21, Juan moved to New Jersey with $200 and a determination to “follow the American dream.”
“I didn’t speak the language, I didn’t have experience, so I started from the very bottom,” he recalled.
He worked in construction for a few months before coming to Baltimore, where he found jobs as a dishwasher and a waiter. Meanwhile, he enrolled in English courses at Baltimore City Community College to chip away at the language barrier.
Barbaran steadily worked his way up, earning a degree in business from the University of Baltimore and scoring a job selling advertisements for the Baltimore Sun Media Group. He held a variety of sales jobs before joining Paychex, a national company that offers payroll processing and other human resources services to small and midsize businesses.
At Paychex, Juan was a liaison to Spanish-speaking business owners. He’s also very involved in the local business community as vice chair of the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
His advice for entrepreneurs who are struggling: stay positive.
“When you struggle, those are opportunities for you to be relentless and keep up with the fight,” he said. “When I was a waiter, some weeks I didn’t make a lot of money and I was worried about my rent and my books and my food. But somehow, [by] staying positive, giving it 100 percent, it worked out.”
